Step-by-Step Guide: How to File an RTI

Filing an RTI is simple if you follow these systematic steps to submit your application either online or offline.

1

Identify the Right Department and PIO

Determine which public authority (Central, State, or Local Municipal Corporation) holds the records you need. Every department has a designated Public Information Officer (PIO).

2

Write the Questions Clearly

Fill out the application using our format above. Keep your questions clear, specific, and direct. Ask for data, dates, statistics, or copies of files. Do not ask for opinions or explanations of "why" decisions were made.

3

Pay the Application Fee

Attach the ₹10 fee. If submitting via post, purchase an Indian Postal Order (IPO) or Demand Draft in favor of the department's accounts officer. If filing online, pay via net banking or debit card. BPL cardholders are exempt.

4

Submit the Application

Send the signed application to the PIO by Registered Post or Speed Post. Always obtain a receipt. For online filing, submit directly on the RTI portal.

5

Wait for Response (30 Days)

The PIO must respond within 30 days. If the request is transferred to another department under Section 6(3), it may take an additional 5 days.
