Consumer Rights in India

Under the Consumer Protection Act 2019, every Indian citizen is protected against unfair trade practices, defective goods, and deficient services. The law guarantees 6 core consumer rights:

  1. Right to Safety: Protection against marketed goods and services hazardous to life and property.
  2. Right to Information: Access to details about quality, quantity, purity, standard, and price of goods or services.
  3. Right to Choice: Assurance of access to a variety of goods and services at competitive prices.
  4. Right to be Heard: Guarantee that consumer interests will receive due consideration in appropriate forums.
  5. Right to Redressal: Right to seek legal remedies against unfair trade practices or exploitation.
  6. Right to Consumer Education: Right to acquire knowledge and skills to be an informed consumer.

Who is a Consumer? A consumer is defined as any individual who purchases goods or hires services for personal use in exchange for payment. If you buy goods for commercial resale or manufacturing purposes, you do not qualify as a consumer under this Act.
